21st December - WL3 - Lloyds Meadow - Kingfisher

A close run thing at the top after a peg to peg battle with Barry Davis and Steve Brew both pegged on the left handside of the second island. Barry took an early lead with some nice carp but then had a barren mid match spell when Steve caught well to the island and in open water with an odd better carp but plenty of smaller samples only for Barry to finish strongly and snatch the victory with his last fish.

Steve Gilmore was pegged on the same island but top right and was catching well to both the island for silvers and into open water for carp until his 14m section slipped quietly and serenely into the lakes depths whilst he was netting a fish......much banter ensued about getting in after it but Steve quietly re-fed shorter and lured the fish closer to finish with a very credible 3rd place just short of 30lb. (Well done also to Billy who went in the baltic lake upto his chest to try to get Steve's section back after the match but unfortunately to no avail).

After being the early league leader I managed to scrape two carp from open water and and few chub and roach from right of the first island and ended up adding a few skimmers for 24.9lb to keep ahead in the league with 3 matches fished. Best 5 counts so its wide open and anyone can still win the league.

Result
1st - Barry Davis - 45.1lb
2nd - Steve Brew - 43.9lb
3rd - Steve Gilmore - 29.1lb
4th - Ian Simpson - 24.9lb

Thursday 19 December 2013

14th December - WL2 - Conway

Wow.....what a windy day and it was bedlam towards the end of the match as gales and gusts started to make things a bit dangerous to be honest. No one could leave earlier though as a 4ft thick tree had come down completely blocking the entrance and exit to the fishery. By 4pm the chainsaws had it clear and we were free to go!

The match started in windy conditions bar the bottom bank and a few brave souls got poles out including Ian Lloyd with a shiny new MAP 901. I personally took out 5 m of pole but as the winds got worse after about two hours, away it went and I of all  people sat it out on the tip! Paul 'Picasso' Robinson drew well again next to the point and made no mistakes sitting it out on bomb and pellet for carp and F1's and an easy win with 40lb. Well done Paul you set your stall out and stuck to it. Jeff Grantham took his pole out, plumbed up short then watched the whole pole get lifted off the ground and thrown into the fence....it was back in the holdall before the all in and Jeff fished a tidy match on a small method throughout for 2nd and 22.3lb. I was 3rd with 22.1lb having started on the waggler to snare an early carp then had some roach on the short pole before the weather became too much and it was the banjo and pellet for a few carp and F1's for the last half of the match.

Now for the tale of disaster.....there were keepnets with fish in being blown out of the water, H had his box slide 6ft along a wet platform and nearly go in. Dougie had a keepnet snap off at the attachment and lost a top it......bait boxes were flying all round the lake but worst was poor Ian Lloyd, he broke a no4 in the first hour or so  when his 901 went off the rollers than as he got off his box to pack up at the end the wind lifted his Daiwa box, side tray, bait and two keepnets attached completed off the ground and then flipped it over landing on 3 x 901 topkits and a cupping kit smashing them to bits.........he then lost the section to me by an ounce.......did I feel quite quilty......yes for about a nanosecond....then I realised I'd won the goldfish sweep as well.

Its 5 days later as I write this and my gear and the inside of my car are still soaked. Officially the worst gusts of wind I have ever experienced!!!!

Monday 18 November 2013

16th November - WL1 Lloyds Meadow - Kingfisher

Eleven anglers turned out so space was going to be a little tight if we were just to use Kingfihser and try to peg the islands that last year fished so well. Rick decided there was one open water peg, 11, and it would be fine as Keith would probably have it given he can't fish 16m anyway.....at least that was the story prior to the draw.

Well Keith then tells Rick to 'go forth and muliply' so to speak, not wanting to be in open water, and says he'll take his chances.....so the draw proceeds and the flyers quickley disappear leaving two flyers and 11 in the bag. With those three left in the bag I decided to break with tradition and insisted I had the last peg rather than Rick who usually has it so we made Rick draw next.....well he had a moan saying "I always go last" and moaned "why are you changing things, you pair must be upta something".......anyway moaning subsides in went his grubby mitt and out came 11.....yeeeeehaaaa me and Ste Brew cried "thats the crap outta the way" and proceeded to draw the last two flyers. Rick proceeded to throw his toys around (quietly mind) as he couldn't say much as he pegged it!!!!

Needless to say Rick had the last laugh and fished a blinder finishing with 33lb of mainly silvers for a hard earned 3rd overall and a section win. Top on the day was Jason Connah drawn at the top right with the end of an island and open water to target he had a slow start on bread but found them later to record 46lb of carp on pellet. He was followed by Ste Brew with 42lb of carp on pellet or corn fished tight to the island in front of the house. Some good backing weights with two other 30's meant a decent day but not quite the heights of last year....yet.

Just a note to say for future winter league matches make sure you book on with Rick by Thursday night, don't just turn up as Rick is agreeing which lakes we have in on the Friday to try to make sure we have adequate room for those booked on to fish.

Result
1st - Jason Connah - 46lb
2nd - Steve Brew - 42lb
3rd - Rick Keeley 33lb

10th November 2013 - TriClub Challenge - Lingmere

Well twenty nine anglers turned up at Lingmere in aid of Claire House Childrens Hospice and talk was actually as much about record breaking sponsorship that the members had been involved in as it was about the fishing for the day ahead.

With breakfasts under way via Jan and her helpers the banter was flying, prizes and booze for later were unloaded and Colin Cook even turned up with 4 gallons of maggs in pint bags kindly donated for use on the day by a local tackle shop. Well done to Colin and the local tackle shops we had c20 prizes to draw for later.

Rick, being Rick, took the lead and despite a few late arrivals and subsequent tweaking of the teams and pegs for the draw Rick and Keith collected the £17 which was split £2 prize draw, £3 Lingmere £4 Claire House off Lingmere and £8 pools. With three teams there would be sections of three with points for club pride and a trophy at stake with Eggy Ferry, Wirral Borough and Rivacre all having a team.

Draw done it was off for 5 hours fishing with all knowing the Top Lake was going to be harder than the Bottom but with sections to go for it was still going to be a fair match. At the all out it was a close call on both lakes with 'pellethead' Kenny Stuart winning the Bottom lake with 57.7lb from 'fuzzyhead' Jason Davies with 50.0lb and Dougie 'hills have eyes' Walsh third with 46.8lb. On the Top lake it was much harder but Billy Gore (sponsored by Araldite) ran out the winner with 27.0lb from Lee 'do I have to fish the pole' Pickup with 25.8lb and Paul Robb 'I'll sit in the corner and say I've caught nowt' with 25.4lb.

After the individuals were confirmed it was down to section prizes and a number of anglers chose to forego their winnings putting it back in the charity pot....you know who you are and stars you are!

Anyway over to the main event the team result. Rick stood up in his usual 'unaccustomed as I am' manner to announce we  had joint second with 19pts were Rivacre and Wirral meaning Eggy Ferry had run out champions with a 16pt total and are TriClub Champions for 2013 so well done to all in 'my' club (it helps when you're in all three!)

Results that matter:
- Prize draw - £58

12th October 2013 - Weston - Canal

A good turnout of 19 found the colour starting to drop out of Weston Pools Canal and reports of hard fishing in the week as temperatures droppedfor the first time saw many anglers struggling.

Colin Cook ran out the winner eventually finding some fish in deeper water late on having resorted to micros on a size 22 hook, which only resulted in gudgeon. Barry Davis managed 31.9lb for second holding off a fast fishing Jeff Granthan who also found some late fish in deep water.

With weights well down on Weston's normal high points it may be Sept should be our last trip if we are to return in future years.

Mystery prizes funded by Rick and Keith's 'spotties' went to the two anglers who suffered the most at the wrong end of the weights list and prizes wne to Trevor Allpress for number of bait buckets on a trolley and Henry Mellor for saying it was fantastic fishing yet weighing in 'sod all' (only joshing boys!)

Monday 12 August 2013

10th August - Hampton - Long

14 turned up....well 13 and I promided to arrive at some point when I had dropped Kath and the kids off at the IOM Ferry......plan was to fish 10.30-4.30 with me getting there around noon!

Jeff Grantham found some early fish on P29 at 4-5m including some better carp but was soon caught and passed by Ian Lloyd who never looked back once his left margin kicked off on P20, he was pestered by roach and rudd at times but the carp bullied them out of the way to set a new 2013 WBAC best with 117.13lb.

Jeff struggled down the edge and shallow but caught well having gone back to the 4m line and finished second with 69.04lb. Kev Valentine found the munters down the edge on P25 (i think) a little late to overhaul Jeff but managed 61.02lb incuding one at 15.14lb, a proper hippocrocopig.

My match, well I arrived a bit early than planned, rushed to set up on P14 but never felt right.....watched Ian Cook bag crucians and carp at 5m off P10 for all bar 2 hours and hadnt set up a 5m rig! I could have piloted the ferry out to the Mersey bar arrived at 2.30pm and still had a similar weight as it was the late late show with 7 carp late on drown the gutter for 37lb but not enough to catch Cookie who weighed 41.6lb (I'd like to think the 90mins made a difference but it didn't really I caught sod all early on and just would have caught sod all for longer I reckon!!!

Overall best venue this year with 34lb per man average and 480lb caught. Hampton can be a great venue with a little space.

27th July - Old Hough - Big Max

Well after the Weston match was swithched to allow Weston to run the Perry Delgrano memorial match we ended up at Old Hough on a new lake for most in Big Max.

It looks spot on to be honest but on closer inspection the pegging doesn't give everyone and island chuck and the margins are clearly rarely fished as its growing like mad but after some careful pegging everyone had an island chuck.

Barry went off like a train compared to the rest of us, nothing spectaclar but he was catching on the pole deep and then shallow......the rest seemed to start on the method tight to the island.....I was impressed with my own casting which is saying something but I felt it was too shallow and kept coming back with blanket weed, clearly the fish were not used to being there and clearing it and a few others had the same. Anyway Barry then chucked the thod about 4m round the corner from Ian Lloyd and catch there asd well....Lloydy was well perplexed. To be fair to Barry he fished a tidy match and caught off all his lines to win with 37.10lb of mainly F1's and small carp.

Yours truely, Ian Simpson was going no were after 3 hours and it was baking hot so trying to force thinks potted in groundbait and managed to snare a few in the last two hours. 3 carp, 3 proper bream and 3 little F1's was hard work but went 28lb for second. Rick had similar early struggles but found them later on shallow with the breeze they had and weighed 25.14lb for 3rd.

Overall a fab looking fishery, just a bit light on stocking maybe at present with too many tiny that are not even maggot worthy. I'd like another go when the weather was better though as it has loadsa potential.

8th June - Hampton - Long

Well a warm sunny day and 20 turned out to find the carp appeared to have spawned very recently so the rumour was the fishing may be tough for some and the canal section had thrown up the winning weights in the week.

So it turned out with Kevin Valentine doing enough to record his first with with WBAC with 53lb followed by Ian Cook who fished the margins throughout for everything that swims and had a nice mixed bag for 45lb and second place. The next three places were all very close with 5lb seperating Dougie Walsh 33lb, Jason Connah 30lb and Paul Robinson with 28lb.

Result

Saturday 25 May 2013

11th May - Weston Pools - Canal

Well my first match for a while with WBAC after doing a bit of travelling with Match Fishing Scene to Meadowlands, Rolfs and Boddingtons and it was good to be back and a part of the craic. The day started brightly with a new brekky location sourced for Weston at the Lord Moreton pub and its good food and a great price (for those who paid for it!!!....you know who you are Mr L)

Results in the week suggested a good day with John Heald having won the Monday open with 100lb+ from peg 2 so plenty of bait was hauled to the pegs and dumped on the side trays. With the wind blowing down the lake onto the straight bank (pegs 2-13) they looked favourite to me and when John Heald drew peg 7 and Jason Connah peg 2 it looked like we would all be fishing for third place.

Well the weather was mixed with strong winds, showers but some sun however the fish certainly thought it was winter again and Weston shut up shop unless you went long and fed sparingly for most. Jason Connah plundered the boards on Peg 2 to win the match with 37lb but felt sure he had overfed early and was probably on the wrong baits (never happy that winner!!). Ian Simpson ended up fishing 16m despite the wind from peg 20 with maggot to catch some carp in the second half to secure second with 35lb. Billy Gore put in a late surge to snatch 3rd with 34.4lb from peg 14 after spending the first half virtually fishless....obviously dropping down from a 0.26 hooklength and Preston 17h elastic made all the difference for Billy Liar!!

Overall a decent day for most compared to the winter woes with nearly 400lb caught at 23lb average per man despite Weston not yet being back to its 5m and margins best!

Monday 18 March 2013

9th March 2013 - Conway WL9

Last but one time at Conway this year and we were greeted with an nice still day and a little warmer than of late but not much!!!

The result was a mirror of WL7 with Jeff Grantham having the peg Ian S was on last time and making no mistakes with some early F1's and carp long on pellet before they again spooked from the shallow water on the island.

Ian Simpson this time was drawn at the far end and had an all roach net for 39.3lb bar one rogue carp taken on maggot up in the water and wasted some time going for carp that probably cost the overall win.

Barry Davis drew one off the point were Jeff was on WL7 but could only get them in spurts of 2 or 3 as they never settled and appeared to be up in the water for long periods but he did enough with 35.7lb to hold off the fast finishing Rob Dickenson 34.5lb and Billy Gore 31.3lb who were both flying up in the water on pellet in the last hour and with anothr 30mins would have been 1st and 2nd.

With one match to go its a straight head to head for the winter league title between Jeff and Rob with another head to head for third between Ian S and Dougie.

Result
1st - Jeff Grantham - 40.6lb
2nd - Ian Simpson - 39.3lb
3rd - Barry Davis - 35.7lb

23rd February 2013 - Conway WL8

Back to Conway for our final three matches in this years winter league and Conway bounced back to its usual 20lb average per man that it has done through this and previous winters. Compared to Blundells at 5lb and plb per man its positively black.

Well it started out looking like Ian S and Barry Davis would run away with it as early F1's and skimmers graced their nets from the shallow water on top of the islands and everyone else was carpless with just the usual roach putting in an appearance. All was looking good for these two until the action slowed and Jeff Grantham threw a bomb into the pole from his peg one off the point and proceeded to bag up for the the next few hours with proper carp. He slowed in the final hour but finished with 72.3lb for an easy win.

Ian S had managed to keep a few F1's coming and along with 10lb of roach took an easy second in the end with 43.7lb. Barry's fish all but dried up but he managed to stay ahead of the pack and finished third with 25.5lb

Result
1st - Jeff Grantham - 72.3lb
2nd - Ian Simpson - 43.7lb
3rd - Barry Davis - 25.5lb

Match Calendar change

Just to note the match calender has been updated due to  circumstances outside Rick's control

July 27th Weston Pools on Canal has been moved to 24th August.

July 27th will now be at Old Hough on Big Max Lake.

Monday 4 February 2013

2nd February 2013 - Blundells WL7

A decent turnout were greeted with what I understand was a wild and windy East Lodge at Blundells and for those that drew on fish and dobbed bread the fishing was good, but if you were off the shoal it was somewhat harder with 6lb being enough for 4th and the Winter Leagues sections being won with 3.8lb and 2.6lb.

Rob Dickenson shared his shoal with Jeff and Dougie but neither could match the silver fox as he fished bread long for 52.0lb of carp and made it 2 from 2 at Blundells and 2 from 2 to start the WBAC year and has 4 wins already in the 2012/3 WL that is a best of 5 format and there are still 3 matches to go!

Jeff managed to snare enough carp again on bread for 30.9lb again long and Dougie the other side of Rob nabbed a few when they spooked off Rob, again on bread to secure third with 18lb

Result
1st - Rob Dickenson - 52.0lb
2nd - Jeff Grantham - 30.9lb
3rd - Dougie Walsh - 18.0lb

Sunday 20 January 2013

18th January 2013 - Lloyds Kingfisher WL6

Well a snowy but surprisingly ice free Kingfisher met the nine brave souls (stupid fools) for round six of the Winter League. This venue, like Conway seems to completely reverse the rules and an excellent match alround was had with over 32lb per man being the average and that with 4' of snow on the ground.

Ian Simpson drew the far end just on the tip of the island and suffered a slow start round the island but found carp fishing long into the deep open water on corn or maggot over micros and had two spells were it was a fish every drop in for a runaway 79.6lb win.

Jeff Gratham drew the first island as you walk on and fished pellet and maggot for a real mixed bag of 39.1lb including carp, chub, skimmers and roach for second just ahead of Ian Lloyd who drew the far bank on the aerator and fished pellet for carp and skimmers and 37.5lb for 3rd. Backing weights were 35lb, 32lb, 29lb from alround the lake and included some great chub especially Rick Keeley who had a dozen some over 3lb.

Its back to Conway for the final three Winter League matches but I have to say I think we may have found a winter gem for next year but then I would say that, fished it twice in ice and snow and caught over 160lb....wow!

Result
1st - Ian Simpson - 79.6lb
2nd - Jeff Grantham - 39.1lb
3rd - Ian Lloyd - 37.5lb

Friday 18 January 2013

5th January 2013 - Blundells WL5

Well happy New Year to all and after a switch to Blundells from Saughall due to flooding for both the Winter League and Club Match I understand it proved a hard venue to crack with only Rob Dickenson finding any quantity of fish and running away with it the end peg dobbing bread.

(Glad I went to Conway with Eggy Ferry looking at those weights!)

Result

1st - Rob Dickenson - 28.4lb
2nd - Billy Gore - 8.6lb
3rd - Ian Lloyd - 6.9lb

22nd December - Cheshire Fishing WL4

Saughall was the intended venue but on arrival was flooded so i understand Rick managed to hastily rearrange to Cheshire Fisheries but only 7 decided to fish the revised venue on a wild and wet day but Rob Dickenson continued his good form and ran out the winner from a close frame.

Result
1st - Rob Dickenson - 25.2lb
2nd - Steve Brew - 21.4lb
3rd - John Heald - 20.4lb
